The Lynchburg Literacy Council was formed in 1985 by members of the Altrusa Club of Lynchburg and the Lynchburg Baptist Association who saw a void in services for illiterate adults in the city. The Council was incorporated in 1986 as an independent agency and received 501(C)3 status in 1988. The LLC is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America. The Board of Directors and all the tutors are volunteers. All training, instruction, and materials are free of charge. The only paid employee is a part time coordinator who works 24 hours per week. Office and training space is rented in the Lynchburg Community Action Group Building in the heart of downtown Lynchburg, VA. Operations are funded solely through grants and donations.
Our Mission
The mission of the Lynchburg Literacy Council, Inc. is to reduce the number of functionally illiterate adults in the city by providing free tutoring, including books and supplies, at the lowest literacy levels in basic reading and/or English as a second language.
